Not an Ostrich

Not an Ostrich

On CNN today, I watched the people in a grocery store in western Pennsylvania as they welcomed President Trump into the store, and he reiterated that he was going to keep his promises to lower food prices.
This store is 50-100 miles from where I grew up, so the people are familiar. I underand their integrity, their hope, their faith in the American Dream. What I know, though, is that they’re looking a only one part of a system that is becoming more and more unequal. If we can’t afford food, it isn’t because of bird flu. It’s because the people in power, includning our President, have manipulated the system so that they make money, while, for example, 1 in 5 children in New York State are going hungry.
One woman said, “We’ll see. If he doesn’t fulfil his promises, then, at the midterms, we’ll elect people who can do a better job.”
I celebrate the voice of the American people.
We are not ostriches who bury our heads in the sand to avoid danger.
Let’s remain aware.
